A Drop of Life

Volvox

The open water of lakes and ponds often turns green with Volvox. The spherical colonies are lined with hundreds of flagellated cells that spin the colony along, keeping it in light levels suitable for photosynthesis. The bright green spheres within are "daughter colonies" that will break out and inflate into full sized Volvox colonies with daughters of their own.
