A Drop of Life

Euglena acus

This small euglenid was caught in the process of fission. Flagellated protists like Peranema and Euglena reproduce by splitting down the long axis of the cell. The process is almost complete in these two daughter cells. They have duplicated their organelles and are only joined by the tip of their tails.
